Tracker Survey

Travel
Survey Data Available
In
2007 and 2008, NIRPC conducted the Travel Tracker
Survey in cooperation with the Chicago
Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), which is
the metropolitan planning organization for the
Chicago
area. The
purpose of the survey was to learn about how and
why people travel in the greater Chicago
metropolitan area, including northwest
Indiana.
A total of 3,838
households in our region were surveyed for either a 24-hour or 48-hour travel
period. NuStats,
Inc. of
Austin, Texas
was the contractor for this survey, contacting
households in one of two ways.
One way included a random digit dialing
method to reach households with both listed and
unlisted phone numbers.
The second method included mailing addresses
from a commercially available source of known
residential addresses.
The two-way approach was used to
overcome the tendency for some households to be
without a land phone line.
The
households were contacted with a recruitment call
that included the gathering of some general
information. Travel
diaries were mailed to each household that agreed
to participate, and the household members were
asked to record all travel information for a
24-hour or 48-hour period.
This information was then reported through a scheduled telephone interview.
Our thanks go out to the 3,838 northwestern
Indiana
households who participated in the Travel Tracker
Survey. The
information gathered will be used for planning
transportation improvements and for
transportation-related air quality analysis.
The
public use database from the Travel Tracker Survey
is now available for use by academic, professional
and other research entities.
